A Snake Measure Tool (often called a Snake Measurer or Snake Measure) is a digital software and mobile application designed to calculate the length of a snake accurately without having to physically handle or stress the animal. Measuring a snake with a traditional tape measure can be highly stressful and inaccurate because the snake will naturally twist, coil, and squirm.
The original and most widely used version was the Serpwidgets Snake Measurer, which is widely available as the Snake Measurer App on the Google Play Store or through various open-source web interfaces. How It Works
The tool relies on photo-based, reference-calibration technology. The process involves the following steps:
Take the Photo: Place a flat object of known length (like a 12-inch ruler, a credit card, or a coin) on a flat surface right next to the snake. Take a photograph from directly overhead (bird’s-eye view).
Calibrate: Upload the photo to the app or software. You will place two reference points on the ends of your known object and input its actual length.
Trace the Snake: Click dots sequentially along the spine of the snake from its head all the way to its tail.
Calculate Length: The software instantly computes the snake’s length based on the known scale object, adding up the straight-line distances and curves between your points to give an accurate measurement. Key Features
Curved Measurements: The software calculates a curved length, which follows every twist and turn of the snake’s spine, rather than just a straight “dot-to-dot” measurement.
No Stress for the Snake: Eliminates the need to wrestle with the reptile or stretch it out against a rigid tape measure.
Multiple Units: Results can usually be output in centimeters, millimeters, meters, inches, or feet.
Tracking Growth: Many of these tools allow users to create “animal profiles” to securely track the growth and development of their pet snakes over time. Common Alternatives
Because the original web-based Serpwidgets tool suffered occasional website downtime, snake owners and reptile enthusiasts have developed several alternative methods and stand-alone variations:
Tarquin’s Caving Site Snake Measure: A fully functional, open-source browser tool based on the original Serpwidgets method that allows local image loading and works on modern browsers.
The String Method: A non-digital classic where an owner carefully guides a non-stretching piece of string alongside the snake and measures the string’s length afterward.
